GROWING UP... MIN JIE, YINCHUAN

I wanna say sorry in advance for my bad english... you know, I'm a lucano, that means a person coming from Lucania, a small region in south Italy... although I lived long time abroad, I have never mastered my english. My foult, my regret, but at least I can communicate, right?

And that's why I am writing in english, and not in italian as usual, because I wish these words will arrive, one day, to Min Jie, the target, the main character of this post. I am writing as a stream-of-consciousness, no stop, I won't go back and correct myself, but I just wanna express and voice out my feelings.

I am still dealing with depression, where I fell down because of a wrong person of my life and wrong choices I met during the last three years... right now I have moved back to my hometown, and this makes me feel warmer... but I still haven't fully recovered. This bad status makes my stomach and intestine work bad, I can't eat normally, and my weight now is 59kg... that, related to my height, 183 cm, it's awfully low.

But. But. At least, I succeed to realize what led me to the gutter I now find myself: my stagnation, my regrets, my indolence, laziness, all these put together made me lose a great number of opportunities to reach the happiness. Many times in my near past I reached points where I had clear opportunities to change my life in better, but I just wasted those because of fear, laziness... I was afraid to go out my comfort zone.

However, before I mentioned Min Jie... why? What this name has to do with my depression, and my wasted opportunities? Well, that's just the name of the woman who offered me a REAL chance to move my life in better.

Min Jie is a girl born a grew up near Yinchuan, the capital city of Ningxia, a chinese province in the north-center of China; the province of Hui, the muslim chineses. She spent though five years in the US, a couple of those in NY and the rest in LA, and thanks to her fluent english we could know eachother in November 2016, during one of my usual western coffee breaks in Yinchuan, where I lived for almost 3 months that year, working for a luxury hotel. At that time I had already reached the point where I could not stand anymore China and chineses... just to explain you better, Yinchuan is a forth tier city, it's not like Shanghai or Beijing... and chineses living there are the REAL chineses... many of them are peasants, have manners far away from standards I was used to in Italy and Japan...  and moreover, I was still young, picky, couldn't fit myself well in a so different environment.

Anyway, Min Jie step in Starbucks on that 15? 20? of November, and literally changed my days... her sincere smiles finally brought me a ray of light. She was different to all the people around... and I'm not only talking about chineses, but HUMANS... she was bright, genuine, emotional, truly excited about everything she talked about... she was ALIVE, she LOVED the life, she loved talking, she loved the new, the experiences, the diversity, the travels... the LIFE... she sprayed out all her zest for life. And yeah, she was beautiful, a natural beauty that didn't need any make up or fancy dress. She loved to wear ethnic dresses, like Tibetan clothing, as to confirm her curiosity for unconventionals.

She was the one who started talking to me the first time; she was the one who invited me out for walking, for eating, for drinking; she was the one who kissed me the first time.

December 6th 2016. We were in the middle of the fog of the cigarette smoke of a pub (a mix of undefined irish and indian style pub), people around were noisy and boor, as usual, but that first kiss with Min Jie brought me into the paradise. I was HAPPY.

We went out the pub and waited 20 minutes for a taxi... it was cold, around -8 degrees maybe... we hugged all the time... I told her to come to my room, a single and comfy room in my company's dormitory, she replied ''Are you sure?''... Yes, that was the only thing I had been sure during all that my chinese experience.

We made love, even if we didn't make that thing... you know, the complete thing... because she had her period... but, anyway, we made love, and we slept together in our warmth. Then, I remember that I woke up for a moment in the middle of that night, and I found her caressing my face and crying... she was sad because the day after I was going to leave Yinchuan forever and move to Osaka, where a new and more-inside-the-comfort-zone job was waiting for me.

The day after she took me to the airport and we hugged for long time before our last farewell.

After, we kept in touch for three months. During that time we were boyfiend and girlfriend, as she came to make clear. We texted, we called, she was the only heater of my cold japanese room.

But then the words started to go through more solid plans for the future, of course... we were boyfriend and girlfriend, and we had to plan a way to come back together and build something serious, with solid rooths. That's FUCKING natural.

But there it came the Vittorio I hate... my stupid stagnation, indolence, laziness, fear of the future, fear of moving forward, moving out of my comfort zone, doing sacrifices and growing adult.

I found the perfect girl for me, then I decided to give up with her.

She offered me happiness, but I was afraid to accept it.

Min Jie, thank you for the unforgettable memories you gifted me.

I was young, I was not ready to embrace your greatness, I was not ready for love.

Please forgive me.

Why am I writing this now, in 2023, after 6 years?

Well, because I'm looking for a way to get rid of my depression, and this means to dig into myself and talk and face with the real Vittorio. Therefore, here is what I figured out: I just need something that makes me alive, that helps me to find back my zest of life, the same I had when I met Minjie. What's that something? That's love, of course. Real love, not the fake one I suffered in the last three years. I need to really fall in love again.

Am I ready for love now? I can't say it. But, I'm sure, if I find a woman like you... althrough impossible finding someone like you now, in my messy life... anyway, if I find a woman like you, Min Jie... I would never let you go away.

I hope you think about me sometimes, even just for a moment.

Kimchi, zucchero e veleno

Marzo 2007.

Tre donne.

Hello, Vittorio Nesti,

Sorry to hear your situation. I was waiting for you at the flat inside from 1:50pm-3:10pm. That taxi driver should take your to the building 2 then you just need to take the elevator in the building to the flat. If you want you may complain to his taxi company about his mistake because he did not take your arrive the building as the address show. At that time, I did not know you were waiting at the entrance of the compound. It was really bad.

About your visa problem, I do not know much about such events. Normally, you perhaps need a Z visa for your working in China although I am not sure. It seems that a Z visa can only apply from a consulate or an embassy of China outside China. The HRs in your Shanghai company should be response for this visa mistake. It is their job.

At this moment, you have to cancel the reservation of this flat, right? If so, the reservation fee will be not return to you from me. It does not mean you lose this part money. This cost should be refunded to you from your company.

Good luck to you!

Mr. ZHANG

I  was not lucky yesterday, I am really sorry for having made you wait for me, I was outside the palace all the time and I totally didn't think to go up to the flat number... It's also my fault, maybe I was so upset after the visa problem and I couldn't use my mind clearly...

Anyway I am sorry to made you lose time, I need to cancel my reservation for my apartment, of course I don't want back the money from you, because this situation is due to my company.

Thank you for everything,

Good luck to you too! Was nice to talk with you.

Mr. ZHANG <zhang_***@163.com>

Hello, Vittorio Nesti,

I may understand your sad emotion yesterday. It is not easy to work and live abroad. I had worked in Europe for many years in different countries, almost 6 years in Germany and other years in Finland. When you meet the difficulty or bad situation in your work or life, just cheer up and always encourage yourself while ask for the help from the kind people close to you. It might be just the challenge you will overcome. And your experience will become much stronger. At least you may learn something that you could not get from a university course.

If you really want to get some working experience in China for your career development, it is also possible to you to apply a Z visa again in either Japan or Italy then come back Shanghai. Certainly, it needs the support from your company.

About the reservation fee, normally it should be not return to you when you cancel the reservation. It is the common rule in the world as you know. If you may find or recommend someone else to take over the flat recently, then it is possible to return it to you after getting rid of the rental cost for the days lost from today.

If you have any more questions, let me know if I may answer. I guess you will have some days at least one week staying at a hotel paid by your company in Shanghai. You may go outside and walk around your company and other sightseeings in this city. Keep far away from the drug and prostitutes, they are illegal in this country.

Good luck and enjoy your stay here!

Mr. ZHANG <zhang_***@163.com>

Hello, Vittorio Nesti,

I checked my account at ICBC, your reservation fee 580 euro arrived there today.  There is 0.3 euro more. It could be the interest. So the flat is ready for you now.

Few days before your flight, you may send me an email to make an appointment to meet you at the flat. The flat address in details is App. 1003, Building 2, No. 1278, Huaxia Erlu, Chuansha, Pudong, Shanghai/上海浦东川沙华夏二路1278弄东锦苑小区2号楼1003室. When you arrive at the Pudong airport, you may show the above Chinese words to a taxi driver. Then he will know where he should take you go. The taxi fee is about 50-60RMB/8 euros. Remember to ask the receipt from the taxi driver. You might get the refund from your company later.

You may also show me your office address, then I can help you check the online map to figure out the route from the flat to your office by the public transport system.

Kind regards,

Mr. ZHANG

But Chinese consulate called to me just just 30 minutes ago.
"Your application for staying 90 days x 2 times is not accepted"
If you agree Chinese consulate accepts the visa for staying 30 days
single entry without any other document or invitation letter.
I asked to Chinese consulate that what kind of invitation letter is
valid for 90 days stay.
But Chinese consulate says that for students internship 30 days stay in

My internship will be not a student internship, as I will quit my school
on 6 of november, and I'm not attending to any other school or
university.

We could say it to the consulate, maybe could be ok. This is an
internship with a future opportunity of long term employment, it has no
relation with study or student.

Hope will be ok, thank you very much

Hello, Vittorio Nesti,

Your name looks like an Italian name, so I guessed you were from Italy.
Have you been to Shanghai before? It is a really big city like Milano in Italy. From the flat to your office, you may take subway line2 from Chuansha station to Jingan temple station, it will take 52min(5 or 6RMB/ticket). From the flat to Chuansha station, it needs about 15 min by walking or 2-3min by a taxi(10RMB for illegal taxi or 14RMB for a taxi) or 3-5min by a bus(1 or 2RMB/one way ticket). One hour on the road is common to people who are living in Berlin, London, Paris or Milano in Europe and here. From smartshanghai website, you may see that the rental of a similar flat in Jingan could be more than 8000RMB. 1 euro is about 7 to 10RMB in past 5 years.

Many foreigners complain that Shanghai’s winter is extremely cold while staying inside since 99.9% apartment without water radiator heating system. It is common in Europe or northern of China, but really rare here. If you ask local Shanghainese about this system, I am sure even more than 80% -90% of them has never seen it before. This flat has such a system because my families are from north of China. We could not stand the room inside as cold as outside in winter. You may look through the attached file to know more about the flat.

Do you know if a M visa needs change to a residence permit? As I know before, a Z visa needs such process therefore I also have to go to police station with my ID card together with a foreign tenant to get a registration form that is for applying a residence permit.

If you live there alone, perhaps you need a cleaning lady to tidy the flat every week. The local price is 30RMB/ hour or 50RMB/ 2hours. Then you may negotiate the price with her and pay her in cash.
The electric, gas, water fee are not included in rental. They might be different every month. The digital TV fee is 23RMB/month, internet fee is 50RMB/month. They are fixed. The rental is paid every three months in advance. Another one month rental is paid as the deposit. It is the common rule here.
If you have other questions, just feel free to contact to me again.

By the way, another engineer from Malaysia is also interested in this flat, he will be in Shanghai in November too. But he does not make a reservation till now, so the flat is still free.

Kind regards,

Mr. ZHANG

Buonasera

Grazie

Vittorio
